Taking the Bull by the Horns

A few months ago I photographed a Professional Bull Riding competition. I never went to one of these events before, but came with a spirit of curiosity. What an exciting event! One of my favorite shots of the evening is shown below. Yes. I was close. I'm not sure I've experienced such a thrilling moment in my short photographic career. I couldn't take my eye out of the viewfinder even as the bull (and the cowboy for that matter) filled my frame. *CLICK *CLICK *CLICK.

The photograph should give you a sense of the closeness of the action, but just to show a slightly different perspective, I found myself in the frame of another photographer who happened to be on the opposite side of the arena shooting at almost exactly the same time. Check out the photos below. It is tough to see me, but if you look just above the bull's shoulder and next to the cowboy jumping on the rail there is a hand clutching a camera. That's me. (The second photo shows where I am at a little more clearly because there isn't a bull or cowboy in the way. Look for the blue sweatshirt in the very front row)

This is a about as present as I want to be to a bucking bull. I am glad I got the shot and very glad I am able to talk about it now. For my part I want my photographs to help bring people places they might not be able to get to.

Film Adventure: COLOR!

Up to this point I've been shooting black and white film, but with the arrival of Spring, I couldn't help but shoot a roll of color film. Fuji Supercolor ISO 200 to be exact.

I tried to follow some of the same exposure guidance that I've been using with B&W film (i.e., iso 200, shutter speed 1/250, f16), but kept my eyes open for the color. I used a local film lab to develop the negatives and then scanned them at home. and

BAM! COLOR!

What's interesting about the color is it is not exactly the color of the "real world" but there is a particular richness and vibrancy of the color that a higher contrast than an eye sees.

In the digital world, post processing presents have replaced the role of film. A photographer can change looks with a click of the mouse. Film is a different story. What my pictures look like are going to depend on the moment I put a roll of film into the camera. There is a certain advantage to knowing what a film is going to look like when it comes out of the camera and not have a million options to consider or little sliders to adjust. When it comes to the post processes, in some regard, film is easier than digital. Develop. Scan. Done.

Every time I shoot and process a roll of film there is a little excitement afterward. With color, the excitement doubled. I know you could probably try and make your pictures look like these using your cell phone, but I would like to think mine have a touch more love attached.
